Gospel Outreach Through Poultry Farming

In April 2023, Jonathan Fitha, a dedicated ministry leader in Sierra Leone, launched a poultry farm. This venture was not just a business opportunity but a divine calling to integrate faith with entrepreneurship. Following his participation in a Tentmakers training program, Jonathan received a grant to kickstart his chicken rearing business after his business plan was approved. His journey began with 200 five-day-old chicks, aiming to create a sustainable income source that would support his ministerial work.

The Poultry Farm

Jonathan's poultry farm has had a significant impact on the Bo community, providing fresh, affordable eggs and employment to local residents. However, the farm's primary purpose transcends economic benefits. It enables Jonathan to sustain himself and his family while focusing on his broader mission: spreading the Gospel through the Business With Purpose (BWP) initiative in Sierra Leone.

Situated in a predominantly Muslim community, the farm has become a beacon of hope and faith. Jonathan uses this platform to share the message of Christ, influencing his community profoundly. The farm's full-time caretaker, originally a Muslim, converted to Christianity through Jonathan's influence. Additionally, when people come to buy eggs from his farm, he shares his faith and invites them to church.

Jonathan's commitment to Gospel-centered business is evident in his efforts to train other Sierra Leoneans. He encourages his neighbors to explore poultry farming and other sustainable businesses, helping them develop the necessary skills and resources to succeed. His vision is to create a network of Gospel-centered entrepreneurs who can make a positive impact in their communities, both economically and spiritually.

Despite facing challenges, such as disease outbreaks among his chickens and the high costs of importing high-quality chicks and feeds, Jonathan remains steadfast in his mission. He continually seeks ways to improve productivity and ensure the farm's sustainability, averaging between 100 to 130 eggs daily.

One of the most significant obstacles for Jonathan and other local farmers is the competition from imported eggs, which make up 80% of the market in Sierra Leone. This lowers prices and makes it tough for local producers. Yet, Jonathan's resilience and faith keep him focused on the bigger picture: using his business as a ministry tool to transform lives.

Jonathan's story is a testament to the power of faith and resilience. His poultry farm is not just about producing eggs; it is about creating opportunities for evangelism and community development. His journey inspires others in Bo and beyond, demonstrating that despite the challenges, the rewards of integrating faith with business are substantial, not just in profits but in spiritual and community growth.
